The Province of Alberta is reminding residents that releasing aquarium pets and other non-native species into lakes, rivers and streams can harm local ecosystems as part of its “Don’t Let It Loose” awareness campaign.
The province said goldfish and other invasive fish can threaten Alberta waterways by competing with native species for resources, altering aquatic habitats and affecting water quality as their numbers increase.
Provincial officials said preventing the spread of invasive fish is the most effective approach because removing them can be difficult without affecting native fish populations.
Officials are asking Albertans to keep aquarium pets, water garden plants, live food, sport fish and live bait out of rivers, streams, lakes, ponds and storm sewers.
Anyone who finds goldfish or other suspected non-native fish is encouraged to report the sighting to the Aquatic Invasive Species Hotline at 1-855-336-2628. Where possible, residents should also provide a clear photograph showing the fish’s entire body and fins.
In a statement, Environment and Protected Areas Minister Grant Hunter warned residents against releasing goldfish into Alberta waterways, saying they belong in aquariums.
“Don’t let it loose. Report sightings of invasive fish and help protect Alberta’s ecosystems by following the law,” Hunter said.
The province also reminded residents that moving live fish between water bodies is illegal. Offenders can face fines of up to $100,000, up to one year in prison or both.
