Nenshi says “relying on Trump” is no strategy for Alberta

Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi is criticizing Premier Danielle Smith’s approach to the ongoing Canada-U.S. trade dispute, saying the province needs to take stronger action to protect workers and businesses.

Nenshi said in a statement that Smith’s strategy of maintaining a conciliatory relationship with the United States and hoping tariffs are reversed is not enough.

“Danielle Smith’s strategy is to do nothing. She thinks being nice to the Americans and hoping they come around is a strategy,” Nensshi said. “Hope is not a strategy and relying on Trump is certainly not a strategy.”

On Wednesday, Smith said provincial officials will consult with small and medium-sized businesses and industry groups about the impact of the trade measures, including Ottawa’s decision to impose counter-tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of U.S. goods.

The premier added tariffs and counter-tariffs are harmful to both countries.

“They disrupt businesses, threaten jobs, drive up inflation, decrease productivity, and strain relationships between allies,” Smith stated. “Although I understand the need to respond strongly to these tariffs, I can’t think of a more disastrous policy decision than cutting off or taxing Alberta’s oil to the United States.”

Smith said either move would devastate the Canadian economy. However she did state that the province has taken steps including forming a cabinet committee focused on the tariff dispute, and planning to create an online portal where businesses can report how the measures are affecting them. She also announced plans for a business advisory committee.

Smith also announced she has discussed with Prime Minister Mark Carney how Alberta could supply more oil and natural gas to markets in eastern Canada.

However, Nenshi said the province should be focused on expanding Canadian markets and supporting workers affected by the dispute.

“For more than a year now we’ve been talking about the need to strengthen Canadian markets, forming a more strategic relationship with the United States, diversifying our global trade relations, attracting global talent, and, most of all, protecting Alberta’s workers.”

“What we need right now is tough decisions and action. Ban American booze and cancel the referendum.”

According to the NDP leader, every other premier is on board with Team Canada except for Smith.”

“Let’s get back to work and save Canada.”
