Japanese folklore just in time for Halloween

This Halloween, step into the mysterious world of Japanese folklore, as Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden, in partnership with New West Theatre, host Kwaidan Night at the Bunka Centre.

Experience four haunting tales inspired by the works of Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo).

Hearn’s celebrated 1904 collection Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things introduced generations of readers around the world to Japan’s supernatural legends, ghosts, and spirits.

Through theatrical storytelling, costumes, lighting, and ghostly sounds, these legendary tales will come to life for a captivating Halloween experience.

Marketing and Sales Manager Eric Granson said this year’s event is different because the garden is closed. “We always pair with New West Theatre, so it’s nice for us to keep up with that tradition. Instead of the traditional Yokai nights, we’re doing a Kwaidan night, which is stories based on Lafcadio Hearn.”

“We’re going to be decorating the Bunka Centre this year,” he noted, with projection images, and live actors. “It’s going to take you through an experience.”

On Oct. 31, there will be two performances from 7-8 p.m. and 8:30-9:30 p.m.

The event is recommended for ages 15+, and space is limited for each performance.
