Local dealership owner group gifts $100K to hospital foundation cardiac campaign

A local trio has made an investment toward cardiac care in the region.

Westwind Honda, McDonald Nissan, and McDonald Chevrolet Buick GMC are gifting $100,000 toward the Bringing Hearts Home Cardiac Campaign.

The Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation-led initiative aims to improve cardiac care in southern Alberta, including through the construction of a new cardiac care centre at the hospital in Lethbridge.

Earlier this year, officials announced that the campaign had surpassed its $30 million fundraising goal, but donations will continue to be collected through to January 2027.

Paul and Gord McDonald own McDonald Nissan and McDonald Chevrolet Buick GMC, and have partnered with Greg Flom of Westwind Honda for this latest donation.

The McDonald family’s roots in southern Alberta go back many years, including an automotive history that started in Taber over 80 years ago. Additionally, Paul McDonald has previously served on the hospital foundation board of directors.

“Southern Alberta has supported our family and our businesses for generations, and giving back to the communities that have supported us has always been important,” he said.

McDonald added, “Having served on the Foundation Board, I’ve seen the difference philanthropy can make in health care. Bringing Hearts Home is an opportunity to give back and help strengthen cardiac care for families across our region.”

Greg Flom is the dealer principal at Westwind Honda, which recently opened a new site in Lethbridge. “Our new facility represents our commitment to being part of this community for the long term,” said Flom.

“Supporting Bringing Hearts Home is another way we can invest in the future of southern Alberta and help make a difference for families across the region.”

In addition to local and regional fundraising, the provincial government has committed $59 million over three years to advance planning for the South Zone Cardiac and Intensive Care Expansion, an investment that is currently estimated at about $445 million. Officials said planning continues, with construction expected to start in the fall of 2027.

“The momentum behind Bringing Hearts Home continues because businesses, families and individuals across our region believe in what is possible for health care in southern Alberta,” said Crystal Elliott, CEO of the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation.

“We’re grateful for this generous commitment and for the leadership Paul, Gord and Greg continue to demonstrate in supporting the communities they serve.”
