Experienced peace officers in Alberta will have another potential route into the RCMP as the national police force prepares to broaden its recruitment program in the territory.
First introduced in British Columbia and Yukon in July 2026, the Experienced Peace Officer Program is expected to expand to Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut later this year.
The recruitment initiative is designed to draw on the practical policing backgrounds of officers already working for Canadian provincial, territorial and federal agencies. The RCMP hopes the program will bring more experienced personnel into its ranks while creating additional career opportunities for peace officers.
Applicants must currently serve as firearms-trained peace officers with a Canadian provincial, territorial or federal agency and have at least three years of service.
Candidates must also hold the required firearms training and certification, meet the qualifications for regular RCMP member applicants and achieve the gold standard on the RCMP Police Fitness Assessment.
The program is part of the RCMP’s broader efforts to attract experienced law enforcement personnel and strengthen its recruitment process.
Recruitment opportunities in Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut are expected to become available as the program expands. The RCMP currently lists opportunities in British Columbia and Yukon.
