Multi-million dollar upgrades wrapping up at Lethbridge Airport

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Anyone flying in or out of Lethbridge will be enjoying a brighter, more comfortable airport from now on.

The City invested $2.6-million into the facility and leveraged an additional $23-million in provincial and federal grant funding for several key infrastructure projects.

Noticeable renovations include an expanded holdroom with new seating and furniture that can accommodate phone and laptop charging, as well as the addition of washrooms past security.

On the way next year are upgrades to parking lot technology and a new baggage carousel.

“The airport is key in the continued growth of our economy. The investment we’ve put into our airport also positions our city and region in a competitive place for business attraction and retention for years to come.” -Blaine Hyggen, Mayor of Lethbridge

Though less visible to customers, important projects relating to the safety and operations of the airport were also done.

Airfield and pavement rehabilitation was completed, a new HVAC system and roof were installed, and there were upgrades to the pumphouse and waterline service.

The airport’s antiquated airfield lighting system was also replaced and brought up to Transport Canada compliance standards.

City officials say with a “post-pandemic lens” the YQL Business Plan 2021-2024 focuses on increasing passenger traffic and revenue diversification through land development. They say when fully developed, the YQL lands could provide $10 million annually in lease revenue and an additional $10 million in tax revenue.

The grand opening of the renovated airport is set for late January.
