Emergency services offering up safety tips for coulee hikers

Warmer temperatures and longer days have more and more residents venturing out into the coulees and river valley, and Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services is urging everyone to keep recreational safety top of mind when enjoying mother nature.

Recently, LFES have responded to multiple hikers in distress while in the coulees, and emergency officials warn that even a short hike can turn dangerous if not prepared.

LFES has released some tips all hikers should following, including letting someone know where you are going and when you plan to return, especially if hiking alone. Make sure to have check in after returning from the hike.

Take plenty of water and be sure to stay hydrated, especially in hot weather. Wear sunscreen and take breaks when needed. Dress for the weather and wear shoes with good traction.

Be aware of any wildlife in the area and be sure to give them space. Stay within your limits health wise, discuss with your doctor or physician before starting any strenuous activity.

Make sure to bring a charged cellphone with you incase its needed to call for help, and should you require help, call 911 for emergency assistance and be sure to provide the best information regarding your location to assist emergency crews.
