Taber councillor resigns forcing upcoming byelection

The resignation of Town of Taber Councillor Alf Rudd’s means residents will be hitting the polls for a byelection before the end of fall.

Rudd announced his resignation on June 26th after accepting accepting a job in the municipality.

In a statement, Rudd says he is grateful to the residents of Taber who have trusted him to represent the community since he was elected in 2021. He adds the decision to resign was a difficult one that weighed on him.

“My unwavering dedication to advocating for victims of crime fuels my belief that I can continue to serve the community while providing an opportunity for someone else to step into the role I am leaving behind on Council,” Rudd says. “I know a byelection was not the result citizens expected, but I want to thank the residents of Taber for their trust and support over the past two years.”

With Rudd’s seat now left open, the municipality will have to call a byelection, which will need to take place before Tuesday, October 24th, or 120 days after the date of resignation.

According to the Town of Taber, “Council will formally accept Councillor Rudd’s resignation into the municipal records and determine the date of the by-election at a future meeting of Council.”

Chief Administrative Officer Derrin Thibault says following that meeting Nomination Day, Advanced Voting, and all other legislated election dates will be announced.

“We know the public will have questions about next steps and a byelection, and we ask for their patience as we work through the strictures of the Municipal Government Act and the Local Authorities Election Act to get the details and dates ready.”

Thibault adds all the details will be made public as soon as possible, and will be found on the town’s website.
