Rules of the road still apply on Street Machine Weekend: Lethbridge Police Service

Those taking part in Street Machine Weekend are being advised to mind their speed and avoid anything that could be classified as “stunting.”

Traffic Response Unit Sergeant Danny Lomness says police are expecting an increase in vehicle and pedestrian traffic along Mayor Magrath Drive south from July 14-16.

“We know this is an exciting time for car enthusiasts and people who like to see these special cars,” Lomness says. “So we just want to ensure that not only the vehicles on the road, but the pedestrians and the other people on the side of the road are also safe.”

He adds during the 2022 event, LPS issued just over 115 violation tickets, towed three vehicles and charged one person with impaired driving.

Lomness says historically the main violation ticket issued during the weekend is for stunting.

“Doing burnouts or smoke shows at intersections or in parking lots. Along with other equipment violations, mainly I would say loud exhaust,” he says.

According to LPS, there have been several incidents on public and private property in previous years where drivers have “engaged in illegal and dangerous driving behaviour.” Lomness says during the weekend, additional LPS patrol officers and Alberta Sheriffs will focus on hotspots such as Mayor Magrath Drive.
