RCMP investigate fatal collision into St. Mary’s Irrigation District Canal

Three people have died after driving off the road into the St. Mary’s Irrigation District canal early Monday morning.

According to RCMP, officers were called to the scene on Highway 523 and Range Road 73 in Cypress County around 1 a.m. The vehicle, which officials say was submerged on its roof, had four people inside, one of which was able to escape and get to a nearby home, where they called 911.

Cypress County Fire, Medicine Hat Fire Aquatic Rescue and EMS were called. Aquatic Rescue determined the other three occupants were still inside the vehicle. A 28-year-old male, and a 21-year-old female from Medicine Hat, along with a 21-year-old female from Swift Current, Saskatchewan, were declared deceased at the scene.

The RCMP Collision Reconstructionist unit was called to the scene, and police continued to investigate. According to RCMP, no further details will be released.
