City asking residents to conserve water to avoid mandatory restrictions

The City of Lethbridge is asking those across the region to limit their water usage if possible, to help avoid any potential mandatory restrictions.

According to officials, several water basins in southern Alberta are experiencing shortages due to the hot and dry weather conditions.

Conserving and limiting water includes limiting watering lawns or washing cars outdoors, minimizing shower times or bath levels and only using the washing machine and dishwasher when necessary. Residents are also recommended not to run the tap unnecessarily and consider reusing water where possible.

While the community works to ration water, the city says they will do the same thing by not washing city vehicles unless “necessary for safety reasons,” cutting back the watering of sports fields, schools and feature parks. The Gyro Spray Park at Nicholas Sheran and Rotary Fountain in Galt Gardens will be closed temporarily as of the end of the day Thursday; however, the Legacy Park Spray Park will remain open.

Communities that get their water from the city, including Coaldale, Coalhurst, Picture Butte, Monarch, Diamond City, Shaughnessy, and Iron Springs, are also asked to reduce their water usage to help with the conservation effort.
