AHS providing support to NWT evacuees

Alberta Health Services (AHS) says it will work with cancer patients who were evacuated from the Northwest Territories to ensure they get the treatment they need.

“If you are a patient who is expected for assessment or treatment for a cancer diagnosis in the Northwest Territories, please call the Alberta Cancer Centre Transition Team, toll-free, at 1-888-432-8865,” reads a news release from AHS. “AHS will work with you to ensure your assessment and/or treatments are not interrupted.”

According to AHS, 55 NWT residents have been placed in continuing care spaces throughout Alberta and it is preparing to support between 150 and 200 home care clients. Alberta is also supporting about 30 obstetrical patients from the NWT.

“In addition, approximately four patients requiring acute care, along with 19 NWT dialysis patients, are now receiving care at various Alberta sites,” AHS says.

The health authority is also providing support at reception centres in Edmonton, High Level, Fort McMurray, Valleyview, Fox Creek, Peace River and Grande Prairie. This includes services and supports for mental health and addiction, home care, public health, Indigenous wellness and pharmacy support.
