Try out para ice hockey thanks to AHS

Those looking to try their hands at Para Ice Hockey will have the opportunity to do so, thanks to Alberta Health Services.

Community members in and around the Lethbridge area can either play a full season of para ice hockey or sign up for an individual session.

Para ice hockey, formerly known as sledge hockey, is much like traditional hockey with some modifications that allow those with physical impairments to the lower half of the body to play hockey. Players will sit in a specifically designed sled with two regular-sized hockey skate blades underneath that allow the puck to pass through. There are also two sticks with metal picks on the end that allow the players to propel themselves on the ice.

This program is made possible thanks to partnerships with the Lethbridge Minor Hockey Association and the Lethbridge Sports Council. The sessions are from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Ice Arena with the first session on Monday.

All equipment is provided, and AHS recommends reserving a spot but calling or emailing Shana Wandler, otherwise spots will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Para ice hockey will be played on the following dates:

  • Nov. 27
  • Dec. 18
  • Jan. 15
  • Jan. 29
  • Feb. 26
  • March 4
  • March 11
  • March 18
  • March 25
