Christmas check stop campaign ends with 16 impaired drivers busted

Lethbridge Police have wrapped up this year’s Christmas Check Stop campaign after getting 16 impaired drivers off the road.

The month-long initiative aims to increase road safety by directly stopping impaired drivers, as well as create a police presence to act as a deterrent for drinking and driving.

About 1,250 vehicles were checked and seven cautions were issued for having a blood alcohol content of .05 or greater. There was one refusal to provide a breath sample, one novice driver roadside sanction fail and two day-long license suspensions. Police also handed out 83 tickets and executed two warrants.

In 2022, seven impaired drivers were caught during the campaign.

“LPS thanks Alberta Sheriffs and RCMP for their assistance during the campaign as well as volunteers with the Lethbridge and Area chapter of MADD. Police would also like to thank the majority of drivers encountered on the roads who were sober and ensured they were driving responsibly,” reads a news release from LPS.
