Honouring Alberta’s heritage heroes

Alberta has a rich, vast history and Alberta’s government wants to recognize Albertans who help keep that heritage alive.

The Alberta Heritage Awards, presented every two years, recognize the outstanding achievements of Albertans engaged in heritage preservation, protection and promotion. Individuals, non-profit organizations, corporations, municipalities, First Nations and Metis Settlements can be nominated for an award.

Through the Heritage Awards, Alberta’s government is honouring and celebrating the exemplary work of individuals and groups who help preserve and share the province’s heritage.

“Our province is full of natural treasures that tell the story of Alberta’s rich culture and history. It’s crucial to safeguard our heritage for the generations to come,” says Tanya Fir, minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women.

According to Fir, these awards are a fantastic way to show appreciation to the people and organizations who dedicate their time to preserving Alberta’s past.

Albertans can be nominated in three categories, including heritage conservation, heritage awareness and outstanding achievement.

Guidelines and nomination forms can be found on the Heritage Awards web page. All Albertans may nominate an individual or group for a Heritage Award. The deadline for nominations is June 1 and nomination packages are available online.

This year’s recipients will be recognized at an awards ceremony in September during Alberta Culture Days. Since the program was reintroduced in 2005, there have been 82 awards presented to heritage champions in Alberta communities.
