“Seedy Saturday” returns to Lethbridge next week, featuring a seed swap, workshops and exhibitors focused on local food, pollinators and gardening.
“’Seedy Saturday’ is an opportunity to learn about gardening, local food and the environment,” says Kathleen Sheppard, executive director at Environment Lethbridge. “We have some great exhibitors returning to this year’s event, along with some new faces and everything is free.”
Currently, 18 unique local businesses and community organizations are registered as exhibitors. In addition to information booths, many exhibitors will have seeds, live plants and other gardening related items for sale.
“Seedy Saturday” also features a popular seed swap – where anyone can bring seeds to trade or take new seeds to try. Returning to this year’s event will be a free compost station. Compost is available for household use to anyone who brings their own container.
“The seed swap is a highlight of ‘Seedy Saturday’ events,” adds Sheppard. “We invite everyone to bring their extra seeds to trade for something new. Gardeners who don’t have seeds to trade are welcome to take seeds home to try.”
There will also be three free workshops, including caring for urban trees in drought conditions, using native plants to design a prairie urban garden and an interactive exercise on how to envision your yard as a watershed.
Intended to provide a forum for community members interested in environmentally-friendly garden practices to learn and share ideas, more than 100 “Seedy Saturday” events are held across Canada each year.
