UPDATE – 09/04/2025: Environment Canada has lifted the Air Quality Warning.
UPDATE – 09/02/2025: Environment Canada has upped the Air Quality Index for Lethbridge to a nine, which is considered ‘high-risk’, surpassing the earlier forecast of seven.
BACKGROUND
Environment Canada has issued an Air Quality Warning for Lethbridge.
They say hazy conditions caused by wildfire smoke could reduce visibility on local roads. Officials are asking community members to limit their time outdoors, if possible.
Environment Canada has listed the Air Quality Index for Lethbridge at a five, as of Tuesday morning. That is considered a ‘moderate risk’, with the index set to rise to seven (high-risk) by the end of the day Tuesday.
The agency says people more likely to be affected by the wildfire smoke include those 65 and older, those who are pregnant, infants and young children, individuals with an existing illness or chronic health condition.
However, during events of heavy smoke, officials say everyone’s health is at risk regardless of their age or condition.
Individuals could experience symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough. More serious but less common symptoms include chest pains, wheezing or a severe cough.
When inside, Environment Canada advises that you keep windows and doors closed as much as possible and protect your indoor air from wildfire smoke. That can be done by using a clean, good quality air filter in your ventilation system and/or a certified portable air cleaner that can filter fine particles.
For extended periods outdoors, officials suggest wearing a respirator-type mask.
