Defence Kyle Heger has been acquired by the Lethbridge Hurricanes Hockey Club, along with a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2028 from the Medicine Hat Tigers in exchange for forward Luke Cozens and a conditional fourth-round draft pick in the 2028 Western Hockey League Prospects Draft.
Eighteen-year-old Heger was originally selected by the Tigers in the seventh round in the 2022 WHL Draft.
Heger has appeared in 35 games this season with Medicine Hat, collecting 15 points, along with 25 penalty minutes and a plus-8 rating.
He has totalled three power play assists this season, while ranking 10th among rookie defence in points in the entire WHL.
General Manager Peter Anholt says Heger has had a good start to his WHL career this season and has established himself as a good two-way defence, “who has the ability to provide offence from the back-end.”
“We think he’s going to really help our power play, and we really like the age range and believe he will fit in well with our group, as we continue to build.”
Heger was ranked by the National Hockey League Central Scouting Service in November on the Preliminary Players to Watch list for the upcoming 2026 NHL Entry Draft.
Heger received a ‘B’ ranking by Central Scouting, which indicates a projected second- or third-round draft candidate.
Cozens was originally a seventh-round selection in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft by Lethbridge.
Heger is expected to join the Hurricanes and be in the lineup tonight, when the team welcomes the Seattle Thunderbirds at 7 p.m. at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
