LETHBRIDGE, AB – A veteran RCMP officer is joining the local force as Deputy Chief of Police.
A national search to fill the role began in October with Superintendent of the Red Deer Detachment Gerald Grobmeier ultimately being selected as the successful candidate.
He has 28 years of national and international experience with the RCMP and has worked with LPS Chief Shahin Mehdizadeh in the past.
That familiarity is expected to help expedite Grobmeier’s transition.
However, Chief Mehdizadeh says the selection process was done differently than it has been in the past, as Deputy Chiefs have previously been chosen by the Police Chief.
He says “this year I truly felt it should be a panel that should go through this exercise to make sure we find the right candidate, the best candidate for the job.”
Grobmeier will join the LPS in March.
Until then, Interim Deputy Chief Scott Boyd who was temporarily seconded from the Calgary Police Service, will remain in place.
