14 city trucks get new names including Recyclesaurus Rex and The Bin-Credible Hulk

Oscar, Recyclesaurus Rex and The Bin-Credible Hulk are all new names given to city waste and recycling trucks by students.

Students from the Lethbridge School Division Holy Spirit School Division and home school students again had the opportunity to submit entries to help name the vehicles.

“We are so excited that our student Lincoln participated in the naming contest and came up with such a creative name, The Bin-Credible Hulk,” says Meghan Calder, principal of Our Lady of Assumption School.  “With schools participating in garbage, recycling and organics collection as part of the greater community, this has been a great way to partner with the city. Having the truck come to the school for students to see has engaged students in waste management.”

The city says it received more than 500 entries and four garbage trucks, as well as recycling trucks were given new names. Six organic waste trucks were also named.

“Anytime we can engage the youngest residents of our community in learning about waste disposal is always an excellent opportunity for partnership,” says James Nicholls, collections manager in the waste and environment department. “We were overwhelmed with the response to this naming contest and had some hard decisions to make to narrow down our fleet names to the final 14 names.”

Residents can track the trucks online using the names and see their live location at any time.

The garbage, recycling and organics collection trucks are the third fleet of city vehicles using the tracking technology. It is the same software the city used in the winter to track snowplows, and now street sweepers.
