Charges laid after suspected cocaine headed for Calgary seized at Coutts border crossing

Border officers seized about 30 kg of suspected cocaine from a commercial truck headed to Calgary through Coutts. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) says officers found the substance during a search of the vehicle on April 9, along with 5.7 kg of suspected opium.

The driver was arrested by the border agencies and was transferred to the Alberta RCMP’s border enforcement unit.

“We are proud of the work our border officers do to ensure the safety and wellbeing of Canadians. I want to thank CBSA employees for their continued quick and decisive action and for their ongoing efforts to protect our country from illegal drugs,” said Brad Wozny, regional director general, Prairie Region, Canada Border Services Agency.

The 35-year-old driver is facing charges of importing a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and smuggling into Canada.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Lethbridge on May 26.
