Garbage truck fire prompts warning of proper hazardous waste disposal

Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services is reminding residents to properly dispose of hazardous household waste after a large battery and aerosol cans caused a fire in a garbage truck.

The city says the fire was extinguished quickly before it caused serious and costly damage.

Officials are reminding residents there is a drop off at the Waste and Recycling Centre for batteries, aerosols and other materials. If unsure how to dispose of specific items, residents can use the Lethbridge Loop ap or the city’s website to find more information.

“This is also a timely reminder for residents to bring black carts onto their property following collection. Leaving your cart out provides an opportunity for others to incorrectly dispose of materials that may cause incidents like this one,” the city says.
