Alberta Summer Games return after after pandemic cancellation

The Alberta Summer Games are back this year and will be hosted in Okotoks and Diamond Valley (formerly Black Diamond and Turner Valley) from July 20-23.

The games typically happen every two years and were scheduled to be in Lethbridge, Coaldale and Coalhurst in 2020, before being postponed and ultimately cancelled in 2021 because of the pandemic.

Youth athletes who earned a spot at the games through provincial sport organization zone playoffs or selection camps, will compete in 14 different sports. Nearly 3,800 athletes, coaches and managers from across the province will participate in the event.

More than 100 participants from the Lethbridge area are heading to the games this year.

“The disappointment of the cancellation of the 2020 Games is now surpassed by our pride. We are honoured to celebrate the achievements of over 100 athletes and coaches competing in 12 sports, who are striving to reach their goals and make memories. We are cheering for you every step of the way,” said Susan Eymann, Lethbridge Sport Council executive director.

The last time the Alberta Summer Games were held was in Grande Prairie in 2018.
