The Alberta Motor Association (AMA) has partnered with Kal Tire and local law enforcement to take action against catalytic converter thefts.
Until the end of August, Kal Tire will engrave A vehicle’s VIN on it’s catalytic converters at cost ($40) to make it traceable.
“AMA is concerned about the increase in catalytic converter thefts and the frustrating, time-consuming, and expensive experience it creates for thousands of Albertans each year. And although they can happen anywhere, to anyone, we’re not helpless against it,” says Jeff Kasbrick, vice-president, advocacy and operations at AMA. “Catalytic converter engraving is an easy way for us to help law enforcement and be proactive against this pervasive crime.”
Lethbridge Police say taking part in the program provides a tool to trace thefts and brings awareness to the issue.
The engraving program is based off a pilot program in Calgary where about 1,000 vehicles had their catalytic converters engraved. AMA members will get a fiver per cent discount for the engraving.
“The Lethbridge Police Service is pleased to have the support of Kal Tire and the Alberta Motor Association in addressing catalytic converter thefts in Lethbridge and the surrounding Southern Alberta area,” says Sgt. Liam Breedon, Property Crimes Unit, Lethbridge Police Service. “This type of crime has been increasing and has a significant impact on communities across the province. Taking part in this program is one important step that brings awareness to the issue and provides an important tool to help us investigate and track these offences.”
Kal Tire will also provide window stickers that the vehicle’s catalytic converter is engraved and a free tire and brake check during the visit.
