Applications are open for residents looking to have their say on city boards, committees and commissions. The city is looking to fill about 24 volunteer positions and applications are open until Sept. 22.
“Without the community involvement in each of these boards, commissions and committees, we lack the public’s engagements, their voice, their feedback and their assistance on many of the projects and initiatives that the boards, committees and commissions do and members of city council look to,” said Ryan Westerson, legislative services manager.
Council approved honorariums for volunteers earlier this year. Westerson said these will be paid at the end of the year and vary for different positions.
Standing committee members will receive $25 for each meeting and the chair will get $50. Board and commission members will receive $100 per meeting and chairs will get $125.
Each volunteer will also get paid $50 for attending a mandatory training program.
“Our city council truly values the importance of input from our residents around and appointed to these groups. BCCs provide Lethbridge city council with information, advice and recommendations regarding important community issues and topics,” said Mayor Blaine Hyggen. “They are formed to help handle city affairs efficiently and ordered by representing the broader community. So being a BCC member is one important way to provide your voice in council’s decisions. Each public role provides and opportunity to participate in the present and future direction of the city.”
