United Way looks to get the community to pull together with new fundraising event

The United Way Southern Alberta is hoping the community pulls together for a new event to kick start the 2023 fundraising campaign.

The organization will hold an event called Pull the Bus on Sept. 11 in Festival Square, where teams will literally pull together for a cause.

“This year’s campaign kickoff is like no other we have done in the past,” says Jaci Zalesak, United Way executive director. “Our community needs to pull together like we have never done before, so we thought what a better way than pulling a city bus for a cause.”

Teams of 8-10 will be able to raise funds for United Way by participating. They will be timed as they pull the transit bus 75 feet down 6 St. S. To participate, teams must register prior and raise a minimum amount of money.

The City of Lethbridge has donated dated bus pieces that have been transformed into art pieces by local artist Jason Trotter, which will be given out to teams as prizes.

The United Way community fundraising event runs from September to December with a goal to raise $296,000 to support organizations delivering impactful services helping people access nutritious food, navigate complex government services, and give children the resources to be successful in life.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
