Public hearing scheduled for proposed social housing development

A public hearing is scheduled for a new proposed 30-unit social housing development on the north side. City council met for a special meeting on Aug. 29 and carried first reading of zoning amendments at 416 Stafford Drive North.

The public hearing is scheduled for council’s Sept. 19 meeting before second reading is considered.

The land is vacant and is owned by Alberta Social Housing Corporation. Lethbridge Housing Authority (LHA) has applied for to change it from general commercial to direct control zoning.

“The applicant wishes to develop a social housing facility with 30 supportive housing units as well as a medical clinic and pharmacy,” reads a city staff report. “As the standard use definition of ‘supportive housing’ in Land Use Bylaw 6300 allows a maximum of 25 units, the parcel must be rezoned to a Direct Control district with a custom use definition which allows 30 units.”
