Town of Taber monitoring water reserves heading into spring

The Town of Taber is preparing residents for the possibility that current drought conditions could impact the community water supply.

Though the municipality’s reservoirs reportedly have an “adequate” amount of water in them, at the current consumption rate the reserve is enough for three months. With spring just around the corner officials are expecting to see an increase in outdoor water use and are reportedly working with the St. Mary River Irrigation District to ensure there is a consistent water supply. On March 11th, a new Water Conservation Bylaw was adopted by Taber Town Council that replaced the old one that was 23 years old and allows the municipal government to better manage water scarcity. As well the town is reportedly working on developing a water management plan that will address the varying degrees of drought, which allegedly could include varying levels of action and water restrictions.

A statement from the municipality reads “Our municipal staff are exploring water conservation methods for our buildings, services, and infrastructure, and will share these strategies as needed, or if there is any future impact to the public.”

Town officials are said to be in communication with the province and will follow any requirements or restrictions the Government of Alberta puts in place. Residents are being advised to stay informed and prepared; though water restrictions are not currently in place, the town is asking people to reduce their water usage.
