St. Catherine’s students use pinhole cameras to view eclipse

A Grade 6 class at St. Catherine’s School in Picture Butte was able to use simple science to view the solar eclipse yesterday afternoon.

Teacher Jessica Nelson says prior to the Easter break, students made pinhole cameras. “They are one of the safe ways you’re able to view the eclipse.”

“Part of the Grade 6 curriculum is talking about sky science. Before Christmas, we went through the unit and talked about how the sun makes seasons and about the moon, solar eclipses and lunar eclipses. With the eclipse, I thought this would be cool for them to actually see it in action,” adds Nelson.

Students, Nelson says, were outside for about 20 minutes and were able to use their cameras to see the eclipse. “Once they figured out how they needed to hold the camera, how far above the ground they needed to be to get a clear view of it, they were pointing it out to each other.”

The students loved the experience, Nelson notes. “It was a bit tough to convince them we had to go back inside.”
