More land around Waterton Park purchased for conservation

CALGARY, AB – The Nature Conservancy of Canada is acquiring more land around Waterton Lakes National Park.

The organization has purchased 43 hectares adjacent to the Belly River which provides habitat for birds, amphibians, fish, and wildlife. This site is also home to the endangered limber pine tree, which can live for more than 1,000 years under ideal conditions.

The NCC says this property also contains several important habitats that extend beyond the boundaries of the already protected national park.

Two-thirds of this Belly River property is native grasslands, which also happen to be home to several species at-risk.

Since 1998, the Nature Conservancy has been able to protect over 18,000 hectares of land surrounding Waterton with the support of government, donors, and foundations.
