Free BBQ, entertainment and prizes will celebrate skatepark renaming

An event will celebrate the renaming of what used to be SLP Skatepark to the Wade Galloway Skatepark this weekend. The city announced the new name last winter and will now have an official event to mark the change.

The skatepark was a passion project of the late councillor Wade Galloway, who advocated and raised money for its construction. He died in a snowboarding accident in February 2014, months after winning a seat on council. The skatepark on the corner of Parkside Drive and Mayor Magrath Drive opened later that year.

The new name is a sponsorship deal with the Wade Galloway Foundation, which includes a 20-year deal at $12,500 per year for the first 10 years and $15,000 per year for the next ten years. The deal is a total commitment of $275,000.

The renaming event will run from 11:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on July 22. There will be a free BBQ for the first 200 visitors and donation will be collected for the Interfaith Foodbank at the event.

Boarderline Skate Shop will have demos and activities and there will be chances to win prizes.
