These clever little animals can spend 12 hours a day napping, and in the wild, their napping schedule is a survival mechanism. Gerbils always live in groups, and a few are always on guard to alert the clan if any danger is near or predators are approaching. They do so by stomping their feet to sound the alarm.

There are around 100 different species of gerbils and about 40 different color variations. Mongolian gerbils are naturally golden brown.

Scientists have found gerbils to have a high amount of emotional and social intelligence, which they demonstrate through their complex social skills, spatial awareness, and excellent memories.

These gentle, popular pets are very inquisitive and motivated when they're trained with treats, and they thrive with companionship.

Their teeth should be yellow or orange, and if they're not, it would indicate a mineral deficiency.

They're grateful for bedding that allows them to tunnel, something they'd do naturally, and it must be dust-free for their sensitive respiratory system.

Classified as metaturnal, gerbils are active both during the day and at night.

They communicate using ultrasonic sound. Though we can hear some squeaks they make, we can't hear the majority of their conversations.

We can only hear sounds up to 20 kilohertz, and gerbils use ultrasonic sounds and hear frequencies up to 60 kilohertz.

Petwise Blog: Discovering the World of Hamsters at Petland ๐Ÿน๐Ÿงก๐ŸŽถ https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/39949/petwise-minute/petwise-blog-discovering-the-world-of-hamsters-at-petland-%f0%9f%90%b9%f0%9f%a7%a1%f0%9f%8e%b6/ Tue, 23 Apr 2024 16:31:53 +0000 https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/?p=39949

Satin, Golden, Teddy Bear, Panda Bear, and Black Bear are varieties of hamsters you'll find at Petland.

This strictly solo-housed species is originally found in Syria. They are the furry, sometimes busy and energetic, but more often than not, the relaxed afternoon napping miniatures of the small animal world......

And the smallest variety you'll visit at Petland are called Roborovski Hamsters! We call them Robo hamsters for short, and they'll often live harmoniously together, especially if they're raised with one another.

These good-natured, entertaining pets can only see a few inches in front of them and have poor depth perception.

They do, however, have a very good sense of smell and exceptional hearing. They can learn their name and recognize their humans by their scent and tone of voice.

Sometimes categorized as nocturnal, they are more often called crepuscular because they are most active near dawn and dusk.

With a love for naps comes a love for comfy beds... & one of their favorite spots is in their hut on cozy hamster fluff. A must for their dreamy leisure time.

We're Welcoming Spring & Easter....
Rabbits are Lagomorphs, their order contains two families, pikas & rabbits & hares.
These adorable fluffy creatures are extremely intelligent and they're capable of using logic to solve problems.ย  They're very social & adore companionship.
Bunnies are strict herbivores, babies rely on an abundance of alfalfa hay & pellets, adults on timothy hay with a small portion of pellets & fresh vegetables with a few fruits.
They litter train quite easily too.
Bunnies can be a little possessive & enjoy marking things around your house with the scent gland on their chin, their way of calling dibs on something, and letting you & the other pets know that said item now belongs to them.
They may grunt with disapproval or stomp their foot as an alarm or way to get your attention and tell you something's wrong.
They'll chatter their teeth when they cuddle to purr and they give kisses in the form of many little licks.
They're incredibly gentle, good-natured, loving creatures and they need their room to roam & run, but always be sure to bunny-proof your house and electrical cords.
When rabbits are exercising & showing gratitude & happiness, they'll jump in the air, turning and twisting with joy and kick out their feet doing bunny binkies and they'll zig-zag about while sprinting doing zoomies.

Petwise Blog: Exploring the Intriguing World of Freshwater Stingrays https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/39080/petwise-minute/petwise-blog-exploring-the-intriguing-world-of-freshwater-stingrays/ Wed, 20 Mar 2024 17:32:44 +0000 https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/?p=39080

There are very few stingrays that inhabit freshwater rather than saltwater & the Motoro stingray is one of them.
They're also known as the peacock eye or black river stingray and are found in the Amazon River and surrounding waterways.
Stingrays usually live where there is sand and they'll hide while looking for food. Their advantageous adaptation of having eyes on top of their head allows them to see while remaining stealthy hidden. They can also cleverly make slime, that covers their body, so they can swim faster and be protected from infections.
They're very intelligent and have excellent eyesight.
They have a tube structure between their eyes and nostrils that allows them to send electrical impulses in the water and they use this to communicate.
A modified scale which over time evolved to be a venomous stinger, is their defense tool, which is filled by the toxin produced in glands near the bottom of the ray's spine.
These are shed and replaced every 6-12 months.
Just like sharks, a stingray's skeleton is made of cartilage, not bones & they have live births.
We have two young friendly sibling freshwater stingrays at Petland in our massive tank and their names are Luke & Leia.

Petwise Blog: Exploring African & South American Cichlids in Your Freshwater Aquarium https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/38746/petwise-minute/petwise-blog-exploring-african-south-american-cichlids-in-your-freshwater-aquarium/ Fri, 08 Mar 2024 18:06:11 +0000 https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/?p=38746

African & South American cichlids are colorful aggressive fish that bring loads of action to your freshwater aquarium.
Cichlids love to have their own spot carved out in the tank to feel secure, so having lots of hiding spots, ornaments, and plants is a great idea.
When new fish are added, if new decor is also added, or things are rearranged a bit, it gives the new residents of the tank the chance to find a nook or spot that is their own.
Oh and here's a word you don't hear every day...
Many cichlids are mouthbrooders!
The mother will hold her eggs and hatched babies in her mouth to protect them for 21 to 36 days!
She does not eat during this time and her sole concern is looking after her new babies.
Oscars are a large South American cichlid with massive personalities and they're extremely intelligent!
They're known as the moody fish.
They've been observed moving around gravel or rocks and plants in their tank and rearranging things if they're not happy with the placement.
They can recognize their people and form bonds with them.
Oscars are very picky about choosing a mate and they'll slap one another with their tail while courting.
They're also tremendously devoted to being wonderful parents.
Another interesting aggressive fish you will often see at Petland is the red-bellied Piranha.

Known for their bite....
Or famously their jaws ....
These sharks are much more gentle than some of their scrappy saltwater cousins.....
Freshwater sharks are a class of semi-aggressive fish you'll find at Petland!
They'll live happily with other sharks, gouramis & barbs, as long as they have plenty of space.
We have a massive iridescent shark in our big tank with our freshwater sting rays, which are also semi-aggressive fish!
You can also spot bala, rainbow, albino rainbow, and red-tail sharks in our aquariums.
Angelfish, which are shaped like an underwater arrow are beautiful semi-aggressive fish that are usually quite gentle.
Discus fish which can be striped with bright red or metallic and iridescent blue are stunning fish that resemble a swimming disc. They're also fairly gentle fish & their tank mates should be fairly friendly as well.
Semi-aggressive fish are pretty strong and hardy fish with many schooling varieties in vivid, bright colors.
We have an extremely vast selection of semi-aggressive fish at Petland!

Freshwater aquariums are an ever-expanding hobby and are a lot of fun to have in your home!
The general rule is, that the larger the tank, the easier it is to maintain!
This is because smaller tanks require more frequent cleaning.
Using a gravel cleaner is the most efficient way to keep the tank clean .
If your tank experiences an ammonia spike, it might be quite drastic in a smaller tank and much more diluted, with minimal effect in a larger aquarium.
The rule of thumb is an inch of fish per gallon of water and to add fish gradually.ย  For the first 4-6 weeks, when an aquarium is new it's important to only add some of the hardiest fish.
Once fish are added to the tank, it will go through a nitrogen cycle.
This happens until a good level of beneficial bacteria develop.
This good bacteria feeds on the waste the fish produce and will help keep the tank clean.
Cycle, which is bottled bacteria is crucial and this beneficial bacteria is the backbone of every healthy aquarium.
This is extremely vital to use with your new tank, when fish are added and when water changes are done.
Adding an ammonia remover cartridge to your filter is also helpful.

Petwise Blog: Expressions of Animal Affection: From Cats to Birds and Everything in Between https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/38050/petwise-minute/petwise-blog-expressions-of-animal-affection-from-cats-to-birds-and-everything-in-between/ Tue, 13 Feb 2024 22:13:34 +0000 https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/?p=38050

Let's explore how animals express their deepest affections to one another and to their humans...

From cats and dogs to small animals and birds, snuggling and cuddling with each other and their people is a universal way they demonstrate and receive love. Attention and treats are things they all adore!

For other ways specific animals show affection:

  • Cats engage in mutual grooming, bumping noses, bunting their heads on you, purring, kneading, rolling, showing you their belly, trilling, meowing, and licking. Their tail posture can also be a sure sign of contentment.
  • Dogs sit with you, follow you, wag their tails, jump around, smile, give kisses and licks, and offer huge greetings when you get home. They also give loving gazes, lean on you, bring you their toys, nudge you with their nose, and let out big sighs after cuddling and sleeping near you. Maintaining eye contact with your dog deepens your bond. When your pup looks at you, their brain releases oxytocin, the love hormone.
  • Ferrets look for you, play with you, and give kisses.
  • Bunnies jump for joy in the air, doing bunny binkies or zoomies, cuddle, purr in the form of teeth chatters, and give kisses in the form of licks.
  • Guinea pigs squeak for your attention and sometimes jump in the air. They purr when they cuddle.
  • Hamsters get to know their human's scent. They can really enjoy having their people pet them and receiving treats. They show they want to come out and visit by standing on their hind legs when they hear their human's voice.
  • Birds cuddle, preen you, chat with you, and share their food with you. They chirp, sing, and some will mimic you because they want to fit in and be part of your community.
  • Reptiles show trust and seek attention. They may close their eyes and doze off when you pet them.

Petwise Blog: Discovering Betta Fish ๐ŸŸ https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/38046/petwise-minute/petwise-blog-discovering-betta-fish-%f0%9f%90%9f/ Tue, 13 Feb 2024 22:09:20 +0000 https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/?p=38046

These freshwater fish can breathe air using their trusty labyrinth organ. They're intelligent, easy to care for, fiercely territorial, and named after warriors.

Beautiful Bettas or Siamese Fighting Fish are found in Southeast Asia in the wild, often seen in rice paddies, shallow ponds, marshes, and slow-moving streams.

There are 76 recognized species of Betta fish. Crown tail, delta, double, veil, rose tail, and half-moon are a few varieties.

They can be found in an extraordinary array of colors, such as red, black, orange, iridescent blue, green, purple shades, and mustard yellow.

Female Bettas can usually live happily together.

Males attract females by building bubble nests to signal health and strength. Males and females can only be together for a short time and will fight with one another after they mate. After the eggs are laid, it is the male who carefully places them in his bubble nest, fiercely guarding the nest and caring for the eggs.

Betta fish usually live 3 to 5 years, but some can live up to 10 years. They're an extremely popular pet and are happiest with plenty of enrichment in their home, such as plants, caves, and room to explore.

I like to see meat as a first ingredient, also a chicken meal, for example, as a first or second ingredient, is a good thing, because it is more concentrated than "fresh chicken" and contains higher protein levels.
Fresh chicken shouldn't be the only meat listed in the top few ingredients.
I recommend people stay away from true fillers and by-products that would offer no nutritional value & cause pets to eat much more kibble and produce much more waste.
Unprocessed corn should also be avoided.
Our grain free options are great for pets with allergies and use things like lentils, green peas, chickpeas, pinto beans & sweet potato for example to still have some carbohydrates in the foods.
The protein in the food is also a key factor to look at, if your dog or cat has allergies.

Aches, pains, stiff joints, arthritis, with a hint of anxiety..... Our pets could be feeling this too...

Hemp 4 Paws created by a Canadian company is CBD oil made specifically for pets and it's 100% natural. It contains CO2 extracted hemp terpenes with organic, cold pressed hemp seed oil. We carry a formula for cats and many sizes of dogs.

Iris, an all natural, 100% pet safe calming formula made from a variety of flowers, also works incredibly well with CBD.

We have a variety of premium pet foods & something not always listed on the bag that is an essential amino acid, especially for cats, is Taurine. It's also a very important part of a dog's diet.

Taurine is found almost exclusively in meat. Humans and dogs can synthesize their own taurine but cats cannot.

For Dogs and Cats, taurine is crucial for normal vision, digestion, heart muscle function, for normal pregnancy and fetal development, to aid with dental health and maintain a healthy immune system.

At Petland premium diets, supplements, CBD, iris and all regular priced items are always 20% off every first Tuesday of the month!

The Power of Pets & why the human animal bond is so important.....
The unconditional love of your fur, feathered or scaled family member is massively rewarding!
They can be so funny, charming, sweet, entertaining and of course loving.
There are some health benefits that come with having an adoring animal in your household.
An example of one of their superpowers is that studies have shown repeatedly that a person's good mood increases and bad mood decreases around pets!
Spending time with our pets releases endorphins in our brain, which help us to relax.
When we play, interact or cuddle with our beloved pets, that releases oxytocin, the hormone linked with emotional bonding. It also releases dopamine and serotonin, which calm and relax.
Having a pet can decrease stress.
Interactions with animals have been shown to decrease levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
Having a pet can also lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels!
They can actually improve heart health.....all while warming our hearts daily!!"
Animals can be a great source of comfort and support.
Other health benefits include decreased loneliness and anxiety, better sleep and more physical activity.
Animals can also protect their home by sounding an alarm for their family if something is wrong or out of place.
They have been shown to help children with emotional and social skills as well, teaching children valuable lessons like responsibility, trust, compassion, respect and patience.
Recent studies suggest that early exposure to pets may help protect a young child from allergies & asthma.
Pets have evolved to become acutely attuned to their human's behavior and emotions.
Dogs & Cats for example are able to understand many of the words we use, but they're even better at interpreting our tone of voice, body language and gestures.
Being around animals daily and people who also adore them is just a fantastic atmosphere!
We are here today because of the incredible support over the years from our community!
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for this support!
We are grateful!๐Ÿ™
I want to wish everyone listening today a wonderful new year and all the very best to you and your loved ones in 2024!!

Petwise Blog: Reindeer Games ๐ŸฆŒ https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/35644/uncategorized/petwise-blog-reindeer-games-%f0%9f%a6%8c/ Thu, 21 Dec 2023 18:11:10 +0000 https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/?p=35644

The North Pole's Famous Furry Inhabitants are of course, reindeer, who can also be found in Northern Europe and Asia. In North America, we call them Caribou.

We have two types that reside in Canada: Woodland and Barren Ground Caribou.

Some Caribou even undertake the longest migration of any terrestrial mammal on earth!

This is impressive, considering what their closely related magical friends are capable of on Christmas Eve! An exceptionally large male reindeer can weigh up to 700 lbs, and they have the largest and heaviest antlers of any deer species in the world!

They rely heavily on their powerful nose to help them choose their direction, and Rudolph's guidance, of course! Their nose is vital in helping them guide Santa's sleigh. Their reliable noses help them recognize direction. Reindeer also always prefer to travel into the wind so they can pick up surrounding scents. A reindeer's nose is packed with lots of blood vessels to warm cold air on the way in and soak up the heat from their breath as they breathe out.

Their crescent-shaped cloven hooves give them the perfect tools for traction on those icy takeoffs and landings. They have fur between their hooves and on their nose to keep them warm in the frosty north.

Reindeer can see ultraviolet light, and they are one of the few mammals on the planet that can do so. This helps them find their favorite food, reindeer moss or lichen. This lichen absorbs UV light. It's a fungi, mosslike plant that grows on bark, soil, on rocks, and even under the snow. It's easily detected by their powerful, fur-covered nose.

Reindeer and Caribou need to eat about 9 - 18 lbs of fresh vegetation a day to keep their bodies fueled.

In 1823, when Clement Clarke Moore wrote "Twas the Night Before Christmas," reindeer first started getting the recognition they truly deserve.

Merry Christmas & all the best in this coming new year to you and your family from myself, my family, and all the staff at Petland!

Petwise Blog: Embracing the Season of Giving: Responsible Pet Adoption https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/35534/petwise-minute/embracing-the-season-of-giving-responsible-pet-adoption/ Mon, 18 Dec 2023 20:18:09 +0000 https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/?p=35534

Taking a new pet home is a big decision! The more someone learns and reads up on the care requirements of a particular animal, the better. We have tip sheets for every animal available for adoption at Petland that provide valuable information about their specific needs.

It's also crucial to consider whether they would get lonely on their own and whether they are social creatures who would benefit from having a friend.

Impulsive decisions when it comes to a new fur, feathered, or scaled family member should be avoided. We genuinely believe in the human-animal bond, and these wonderful pets find their forever homes when adopted into their new families.

We also believe in working with and supporting the rescues in our community that work so hard to help animals in need and improve their lives.

December is a beautiful season of giving, joy, and reflection on the less fortunate. Every December at Petland, we strive to fill our Christmas sleigh with food and supplies for many of these animals.

When anyone at Petland makes a purchase of supplies to go straight into our donation sleigh, which is set up in the store, they will receive up to 40% off those items! We are hopeful to gather a large collection of donations!

If anyone has something to donate from home, please call the rescue directly to inquire about accepting these items.

Petlandย will also be making donations to each rescue!

Petwise Minute: Christmas Tree & Holiday Hazards๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ€ https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/35350/petwise-minute/pet-wise-minute-blog-christmas-tree-holiday-hazards%f0%9f%8e%84%f0%9f%8e%80/ Mon, 11 Dec 2023 23:22:27 +0000 https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/?p=35350

The festive season is upon us! This week, we are going to talk about a few things to keep in mind and watch out for to make sure our wonderful pets stay happy & healthy over the holidays.

For some pets, the dazzling glimmer of a Christmas tree is very alluring and holds hazards as well. Many people must get inventive to pet-proof their home through the Christmas season.

Some, like Mike D, even flip to the upside-down Christmas tree to ensure his cats won't face danger & lounge on its branches. (For the 98.1 blog - Some even flip to the upside-down Christmas tree to ensure their pets won't face danger and lounge on its branches).

Some put up a gate or an x-pen around the tree.

I've seen pictures of people using giant present boxes as a blockade at the base of the tree to keep cats & canines away.

Some even just put a picture of a Christmas tree on the wall.

Needles on a Christmas tree can be dangerous if consumed, and tinsel can be very dangerous for pets if ingested as well.

Poinsettias are another stunning holiday favorite! They can be mildly toxic to dogs and cats if a small amount is consumed. They can be even more dangerous to birds and small animals, and should always be kept far away from pets.

Pet-specific activated charcoal is an excellent safety precaution to have on hand. This can help remove any toxic or harmful substance right away before it enters your pet's bloodstream. Of course, always contact your vet immediately if your pet has ingested something that could be toxic.

Mistletoe, holly, ivy, and lilies are also toxic to pets, so be extra careful if you plan on bringing these plants home.

We also tend to have a lot of chocolate and yummy baking around the house that pets could get into. That definitely is not healthy and safe for our pets.

Another thing to consider is that some fumes from cooking, or a new air fryer or space heater, can be toxic to birds as well. There are some coatings used in these products that are very toxic to birds; Teflon can be especially dangerous.

Candles are something else that pairs well with the holidays. Burning or melting paraffin wax releases 11 known toxins into the air that are not healthy for our pets or for people.

Pet House makes my favorite soy-based, slow-burning candles that last for 65 hours. They are 100% pet-safe. We have holiday candles like evergreen forest, gingerbread cookie, or apple cider! They make the room smell Amazing & are 100% pet-safe, even for birds. We have these at Petland, and they are very popular!
