Albertans asked to conserve energy as extreme cold causes surge in grid use https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/36224/featured/albertans-asked-to-conserve-energy-as-extreme-cold-causes-surge-in-grid-use/ Sun, 14 Jan 2024 02:56:38 +0000 https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/?p=36224

The Alberta Emergency Management Agency has issued an emergency alert across Alberta due to concerns surrounding “high power demand” on the provincial grid.

According to AEMA, extreme cold has led to high demand on the province’s power grid this evening. As a result, residents are being asked to limit their electricity use immediately to essential needs only. Unnecessary lights, electrical appliances, space heaters, and major power appliances such as laundry machines and dryers should not be used during this time.

Additionally, residents are asked to delay charging electrical vehicles, plugging in block heaters, and cook with microwaves or other small appliances instead of the stove.

Lethbridge MLA Nathan Neudorf says in addition to our own power generation, the province’s grid receives electricity from neighbouring provinces, and extreme weather in British Columbia and Saskatchewan has impacted electricity sharing.

“Albertans have a history of pulling together in times of emergency,” he says. “If we all make small changes like those listed above, we can keep each other safe through another extremely cold evening.”

Additionally, residents are asked to unplug all electric appliances when not in use as they continue to drain energy even when they are turned off.

RCMP advise residents to watch for porch pirates during the holidays https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/35224/news/rcmp-advise-residents-to-watch-for-porch-pirates-during-the-holidays/ Wed, 06 Dec 2023 23:18:09 +0000 https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/?p=35224

RCMP detachments across Alberta are advising residents to be mindful of porch pirates this holiday season.

According to RCMP Public Information Officer Corporal Mathew Howell, between January and October, more than 580 mail thefts have been reported across the province and that number is expected to climb higher during the holidays.

"With online shopping and all of these different ways to get goods shipped to your home, there is a risk with regards to mail theft," he says. "Between November and December, you have multiple sales like Black Friday or Cyber Monday so there's a lot coming in, people are ordering Christmas gifts."

As a result of the anticipated uptick, Howell shared some advice for residents to make sure they avoid any holiday headaches due to stolen packages.

According to the RCMP, making sure packages do not end up sitting on your porch for too long is one of the simplest ways to ensure shipments are not stolen.

Howell says asking a neighbour or trusted friend to receive the package on your behalf is a simple and effective method of package protection; however, if that option is unavailable, there are numerous alternatives to make sure your Christmas gifts get into the right hands.

"If you can opt for a signature required delivery or provide delivery instructions for the delivery person to place it somewhere out of sight," he says. "Make sure you're tracking your shipments so you know when it's going to be at your door, [but] try to have deliveries come when you know you're going to be home."

Additionally, the RCMP is "strongly recommending" the use of doorbell cameras and motion sensor lights as a deterrent for any would-be sticky bandits. Howell adds that even if a thief is bold enough to steal your package in front of a camera, the footage can be utilized in a police investigation.

"If your package is ever stolen you can use that for information to give to the police in order to hopefully apprehend the suspect,"

To raise awareness surrounding package theft during the holidays, the Alberta RCMP has launched a month-long campaign on RCMP social media and interested residents can use #MailSafety to keep up with further updates from police.

Coaldale RCMP are asking the public for any information on a break and enter in the area last month.

University researchers help locate missing graves in Vulcan County https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/34341/featured/university-researchers-help-locate-missing-graves-in-vulcan-county/ Mon, 06 Nov 2023 22:08:35 +0000 https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/?p=34341

A research partnership with the University of Lethbridge is helping to locate missing graves in Vulcan County.

Research intern Paul Novoseltzev and a team of  students, under the guidance of Dr. Craig Coburn (geography & environment), are using a remote aircraft to conduct the research. It is equipped with technology including thermal imaging, which allows the research to be conducted in a non-destructive and cost-effective way.

“We hope to be able to identify graves that may have been lost to time and, in the process, update municipal records and create detailed maps that will prevent future disturbances of these sacred sites,” Novoseltzev says.

According to the university, nearly all the required drone flights have been completed for the project and the data will help rural communities establish cemetery profiles on local geographic information systems, as well as identify lost graves and areas where further investigation is required.

Local history will also be reviewed to help understand the historical context of the findings.

“Unmarked graves have posed a significant challenge for rural communities for years. In Vulcan County, many of the cemeteries, which were associated with small towns, are now the responsibility of the municipalities and local service organizations to maintain, and many of these cemeteries have markers that have gone missing or were never recorded,” says Christopher Northcott with Vulcan County. “The absence of accurate records and mapping has not only hindered cemetery expansion but made it more likely for historical graves to be unintentionally disturbed during excavations.”

The project is funded in part by a $15,000 gift from Mitacs, a non-profit national research organization. The  other half of the funding comes from Vulcan County and the villages of Carmangay, Lomond and Milo. The Carmangay Historical Society, Carmangay Agricultural Society, Lions Club of Lomond and the Lions Club of Milo all rallied to support the initiative and provided significant funding contributions.

‘Veterans are being created every day’: Flag raising marks start of Veterans Week https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/34297/featured/veterans-are-being-created-every-day-flag-raising-marks-start-of-veterans-week/ Mon, 06 Nov 2023 17:16:17 +0000 https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/?p=34297

A poppy flag flying outside city hall commemorates the start of Veterans Week, leading up to Remembrance Day. Glenn Miller with the Royal Canadian Legion says there will be activities throughout the week and the flag is a reminder to appreciate the freedom we have in Canada.

“Whenever you see a poppy flag, or you see other people wearing a poppy, glance down and look at yourself, sometimes your poppy is not there, poppies are always free, and we encourage you to just wear a poppy to show your appreciation for the freedom that we enjoy today,” Miller says.

The poppy drive started in the last week of October and the Legion is focused on getting people to wear a poppy this year.

“Donations are fine, but the priority is just grab a poppy and please wear it. Poppies are free, we don’t ask anybody to pay,” says Jeff Alden, poppy chair for the Royal Canadian Legion Br. No. 4. “A poppy is a symbol of remembrance of the sacrifices of the veterans that went before us, what they gave to give us the freedoms to walk around the city, to have an education, to go to school where you want to go to school, study the religion you want to study, do the things you want to do.”

He adds he does not want people to see Remembrance Day as an endorsement of war, but rather as a day to remember veterans and their sacrifices.

“Veterans are being created every day and that’s one of the things that people forget,” Alden says. “We have a lot of peacekeepers out there that have active service, however, did not carry a weapon.”

Events for the week include veterans visiting local schools to speak, the Lethbridge Hurricanes veteran's hockey game on Nov. 10 and Remembrance Day ceremonies.

Former MD of Taber employee charged after allegedly misappropriating $30K over two years https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/32873/featured/former-md-of-taber-employee-charged-after-allegedly-misappropriating-30k-over-two-years/ Wed, 13 Sep 2023 19:08:37 +0000 https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/?p=32873

A former employee at the MD of Taber has allegedly misappropriated funds for their own use.

According to a release from Taber Police Service, in February 2023 an investigation was conducted after the MD of Taber Chief Administrative Officer reported that a former employee who worked in the tax sector had taken funds.

After an investigation, police determined that the former employee had allegedly stolen approximately $30,000 over a two-year period.

In a release, the CAO of the MD of Taber, Arlos Crofts says that the allegations have weighed on the District.

“These allegations have weighed heavily on us, as we are committed to maintaining public confidence. Upon the emergence of these concerns in January 2023, the municipal Senior Administration took prompt action. This includes conducting a thorough internal investigation, and briefing Council once we were apprised of the situation. Subsequently, Council took immediate steps and transferred the investigation to local law enforcement for further examination. We have fully cooperated with the Taber Police Service throughout this process and will continue to do so through to resolution. The outcomes of the law enforcement inquiry are matters for the police service and justice system. We will respect the process and abstain from making any further comments on the matter at this time.”

Reeve Merrill Harris issued a statement thanking the Taber Police Service as well as admins.

“The allegations of potential misuse of municipal funds have weighed heavily on each member of Council. When we learned of this incident, we were shocked, dismayed, and disappointed. We want to thank our Municipal Administration and the Taber Police Service for dealing with this incident in a prompt and professional manner. We appreciate the open working relationship between the Taber Police Service, Administration and Council.”

Jill Speer, a 45-year-old from Taber, has been charged with theft over $5,000 and Fraud over $5,000. Speer is scheduled to appear in Taber Court of Justice on September 19.

Neil David Fox, 32, was charged on Aug. 27 after a 32-year-old woman was followed by a man in a vehicle while out jogging.

Police say they have received complaints from additional victims about Fox after news of the charges was released.

"Further investigation determined that on Aug. 16, 2023 a male in a white truck approached a 15-year-old girl who was riding her bike in the area of the 1700 block of 23 Street North and propositioned her for sex," reads a news release from the Lethbridge Police Service. "The girl declined and proceeded to ride away but was further followed by the male. Fearful for her safety, she took steps to hide from him until he left the area."

LPS says there was another report from a 54-year-old woman who said she was approached by a man while sitting on her porch on Aug. 28 who, after a short conversation, exposed his genitals to her.

"Fox was subsequently arrested and further charged with invitation to sexual touching, criminal harassment and committing an indecent act.  Fox has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to make is next court appearance on Sept. 18," says LPS.

Lethbridge police advise of high risk offender https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/32646/featured/lethbridge-police-advise-of-high-risk-offender/ Wed, 30 Aug 2023 21:58:33 +0000 https://www.mylethbridgenow.com/?p=32646

Lethbridge police are warning the public of a person they believe is at high-risk of re-offending after he served a federal sentence for serious convictions against a child.

"Cory Raymond Cook, 23, was recently released from custody on a Peace Bond in relation to a sexual assault involving a four-year-old girl," reads a news release from the Lethbridge Police Service. "Police believe Cook poses a significant risk of harm to children in the community. He engages in behavior that is impulsive and opportunistic and information in his file indicates he may attempt to seek out relationships with females who have children."

He is bound by conditions prohibiting him from having any contact with children under the age of 16 and he must advise his probation officer of any relationships with people who have parental responsibilities with children under 16.

He is not permitted to enter any public park or swimming area where children under 16 are likely to be present. This includes daycares, playgrounds or community centres and he cannot seek employment or volunteer work in a capacity that involves being in a position of trust or authority towards persons under the age of 16.

"Cook has been assessed as an above average risk to re-offend and is being monitored by the LPS High Risk Offenders Unit," LPS says. "The Lethbridge Police Service is issuing this information and warning after careful deliberation of all related issues, including privacy concerns, in the belief that it is clearly in the public interest to inform members of the community of the residency of Cory Cook. Police believe there is a significant risk to public safety."

Cook is described as a Caucasian male, approximately 5’9” tall, 180 lbs., with dirty blond/brown hair and brown eyes. Police say he is known to change his appearance by growing facial hair or altering hair colour and style.

"Residents are advised that the intent of this process is to enable members of the public to take suitable precautionary measures and not to engage in any form of vigilante action," the police press release concludes.
